The best phone cases last forever, protect your phone from accidental falls, and generally make your device feel less vulnerable. But how does this go against the need to buy a case, if not the case itself? Do you really need a phone case at all?

Mobile phone cases have always been a divisive topic. Some hate them for the added bulk they cause on the phone, which detracts from its sleek design, but many love them because of how a case can protect the phone. A cracked screen is one of the most common causes of smartphone failure, so putting some extra love and protection around your handset can reduce the risk of shattering.

But does this make a case ‘necessary’? In this guide, we’ll explain the pros and cons of buying a phone case and reveal whether it’s worth investing in a touchscreen cover, instead.

Mobile phone cases come in all shapes and sizes and can cost anything from a few pounds to thousands. What matters more is how it will protect your mobile from potential knocks and drops. If you care more about the aesthetic design of your handset, perhaps a minimalist case is the way to go. If you want your handset to stand out, get one with bold designs and bright colors.

There is a huge range of phone cases out there, covering everything from clear plastic covers to hefty protective cases, and some include bonus features. You can also pick up phone cases that are compatible with multiple devices.

Do cases overheat phones?

Cases can get hot because they are made of materials that expand and contract with the natural movements of your hand or in the case of your phone, its charge.

The materials used for construction can also be volatile. It’s not hard to imagine your device becoming overheated, or even exploding when it is exposed to elements that it shouldn’t.

Do a rubber phone case protect your phone?

Another question comes up occasionally in our comments section, especially if you have a mobile phone with a metal back: Does a rubber case (or other non-plastic protective covering) actually protect a phone better than a plastic case? There are no real studies to show this, but it seems more a matter of user preference.

These were the results of a separate reader survey we ran a couple of years ago, and while plastic cases have had their ups and downs in terms of quality and overall effectiveness, cases with rubber sleeves seem to work in a relatively reliable fashion: About 65 percent of respondents to the previous survey said they use a protective cover, and most reported being satisfied with the case’s protection.

They do cost more than the plastic covers (which themselves have limited use), and will not always fit over other phones with different sizes or styles of backs. They are also far more prone to cracking and breaking than plastic covers, however.

While some are available in decent variety, there are still some huge phone cases available.

Do hard phone cases scratch your phone?

Smartphone smartphones are rarely as fragile as it might appear, even if they can suffer scratches and dents. But if you’re paranoid about scratching your smartphone, you might want to invest in a hard case.

A hard case will prevent damage to your phone and also adds to the durability of your phone. It’s probably not something you want to buy when buying a new phone, but it’s worth thinking about if you’re thinking about upgrading a phone that’s more than a few months old.
